Abstract
Cognitive semantics discusses language as a part of the human ability to explain the imagined world. Physical experiences are an important factor in the formation of concepts in the mind. Image schemas are one of the ways to receive different concepts of speech. Johnson and Lakoff (1987), divide image schemas into three general categories (container, pass, and force). In the present research, using a descriptive-analytical method and library-based data collection, the types of container schemas and their symbols in the Haft HaftPeykar Nezami, have been investigated in order to determine the frequency of each schema and to reveal the concepts desired by the poet. The findings showed that all three types of container schemas (inside-outside, full-empty, and content-surface) were found in the poems of Haft-Peykar. Among 380 container schemas in Nezami's poems, 283 were inside-outside, 66 were surface - content, and 31 were full - empty. The inside-outside schema had the highest frequency and the full-empty schema had the lowest frequency. Also, the concepts of jealousy, hope and awareness, happiness and sadness, adversity and darkness, darkness and isolation, negligence, non-acceptance of responsibility, and freedom and liberty were expressed through symbols such as: heart, love, night, cave and well.
