Abstract

Signs, as fundamental elements of meaning transfer, play a key role in decoding texts and finding a way deep structure of the poet's thought. Contemporary theorist Umberto Eco emphasizes dynamics of meaning and the active role in the interpretation process and believes that signs find meaning in the context of the cultural and social encyclopedia of the audience. Iraqi poet Yahya Al-Samawi, using semiotic capacities, represents the complicated situation Iraqi society. The poem "Shahida Qabr Al-Min Rukham Al-Kalimaat" provides a suitable platform for analysis based on Eco's theory, considering the multiple social and discursive layers.The present study, with descriptive-analytical approach and relying Eco's semiotic components, has examined semiotic rolest work. The findings show that Al-Samawi recreates national identity by using physical linguistic signs and conveys lived experience to the audience through the connection of expression and event. Evoked, voluntary, and material continua are present in his poetry; the high frequency of physical and material activities, especially in the part of metaphor and idiom, facilitates understanding and harmony between form and content, and in contrast, the element of analysis (pure analyzability) has the least frequency, which indicates the dominance of a holistic approach and the fluidity of meaning in poetry.
